Site outage und other stuff
October 29, 2007 on 9:56 pm | In News | 10 CommentsDear iTLU users,
you probably noticed the download problems in the last few weeks and the 24h outage of the site yesterday. The cause of these problems was my hosting provider, who locked me out of some directories and told me, that I’m using to many ressources on their systems. I was kind of surprised, as iTLU does not generate much more than 5000 hits per day, which is not was I’d call "excessive usage". My hoster provided very good services in the past, so I’m not sure what happened there. As a conclusion, I don’t know how long I may continue to run this website, as I’m not willed to pay high hosting fees for an old hobby project. Maybe I’ll put a donate button on the page, as some of you already offered donations for the tool. But I’ll only do that, if I don’t find another solution.
So, what’s up with iTLU at the moment? I’ve never really finished iTLU2, because I don’t use it myself anymore. I’m not sure if i’ll ever continue, sorry
On the other hand, a friend of mine and I started with a technical prototype for an iTunes sync application that runs on both Windows and Mac. It may last as a proof of concept, but it might also be a successor of iTLU, who knows!
There are some issues in iTLU1, so I might release a new build somewhen. The main two problems are:
- iTunes events are lost under Windows Vista. To resolve this issue, you have to disable User Account Control.
- iTLU crashes if you try to sync media files that iTunes does not support. To resolve this issue, only add extensions that can be added to iTunes without conversion (like .mp3 work, but .wav does not).
This is it, sorry again for the outage!
Yves

This works just fine for me under vista and with the latest itunes. I don\’t know why people complain so much about this software. It works perfectly for my needs and I have been using it for about 2 years now. THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT SOFTWARE. It\’s one of my favorites. I hope it never loses compatibility…that\’ll be a sad day for me.

Just noticed this post you made. I’ve been using iTLU for some time to update various computers’ iTunes library files with music in a central media storage drive. It has worked well, but you said that you yourself don’t even use iTLU anymore. What else do you use? I have scoured the internet for different solutions, and there is no single, great idea out there. Just wanted to know your thoughts…

Ever thought of opening the source code of iTLU1? If you don’t want to update i any more, why not make open source of it?

Hi Yves,
It had been a great pleasure using iTLU when it was an active project.
You probably remember me from a few email transactions.
It was you who got me into iTunes plugin development; have you seen iTSfv? Over the last few years it has been developed to be feature rich:
iTSfv has many number of visible and hidden features: automatic genre tagging from Last.fm, exporting iTunes Store artwork, downloading Lyrics from LyricsWiki, Synchrocleaning iTunes Music Library, ReverseScrobble – recovering playedCount from Last.fm, automatic rating according played pattern, creating statistics for your music library, and many more…
http://itsfv.sourceforge.net/
Hope you try it.
Best Regards,
McoreD

Hey thanks for posting the link for this software. I am new to ITunes, just bought an Ipod Touch and after putting all my music on my hard drive I decided to move it to an external hard drive and I deleted the ITunes folder on my laptop.
This program deleted all the orphan files within minutes.
